Opening Hours shops

Shops in Maastricht close relatively early in comparison to other countries. On Monday shops open somewhere between 11.00 hrs and 13.00 hrs. On Thursday most of them are open until 21.00 hrs and on Saturday most of them close relatively early at about 17.00 hrs. Note however that it is not possible in most shops to pay with credit card, so you need to take money from the ATM beforehand!

in general opening hours are as follows:

Monday:            13.00 hrs - 18.00 hrs
Tuesday            09.00 hrs - 18.00 hrs
Wednesday      09.00 hrs - 18.00 hrs
Thursday          09.00 hrs - 21.00 hrs
Friday                09.00 hrs - 18.00 hrs
Saturday           09.00 hrs - 17.00 hrs
Sunday              CLOSED*

Grocery Stores

Throughout Maastricht there are a variety of grocery stores. Several, which are located in the city center, will be brought to your attention during the city tours given in the arrival week.

The shops closest to the Guesthous on the Brouwersweg are the Albert Heijn and C1000 located in the shopping mall called the Brusselsepoort. It's opening times are as follows:

Monday:            08.00 hrs - 20.00 hrs
Tuesday            08.00 hrs - 20.00 hrs
Wednesday      08.00 hrs - 20.00 hrs
Thursday          08.00 hrs - 21.00 hrs
Friday                08.00 hrs - 21.00 hrs
Saturday           08.00 hrs - 20.00 hrs
Sunday              CLOSED*

Áll of this is located at Brusselsepoort 45.These stores both contain several brands of each product ranging from for instance, the cheaper, house-branded Cola or the actual Pepsi or Coca Cola.

Another grocery close by, yet in another direction is called the Aldi. This shops also offers a variety of products, yet is much cheaper than both Albert Heijn and C1000. The Aldi is located at Volksplein 34B. It's opening hours are as follows:

Monday:            08.30 hrs - 19.00 hrs
Tuesday            08.30 hrs - 19.00 hrs
Wednesday      08.30 hrs - 19.00 hrs
Thursday          08.30 hrs - 19.00 hrs
Friday                08.30 hrs - 19.00 hrs
Saturday           08.30 hrs - 18.00 hrs
Sunday              CLOSED*

Difference between a pharmacy and a drugstore

Here in the Netherlands if you are in need of some basic medicine (like aspirin) you can get this without a prescription from your local drugstore (called Etos & Kruidvat), wherein the Kruidvat is, on average, cheaper than the Etos. Closest to the Guesthouse is the Etos which is also located in the Brusselsepoort.

Convenience Stores

As you probably did not pack all your pots, pans, bed linnen, etc you will most likely have to buy this. As you don't want to spend too much money on this we suggest you to buy this at the Hema also located in the Brusselsepoort (with the same openinghours!), it offers a wide variety of linnen, glasswork, pots, pans, towels etc.

Tip: before you go on a shopping spree check whether you really need it, it could be the case that several of these items are still available at your Guesthouse!

Electronic Equipment

If you need to buy any electronic appliances the Brusselsepoort is once again the closest place where you can buy these, the shops are called Dixons and Expert (for opening hours those from the Albert Heijn). In the city center there is also a shop called the Handyman (see 'general opening hours') which has pretty much everything ranging from (empty) DVD's to phone chargers. This shop is situated at the Nieuwstraat 17 (near the Market square) and will be pointed out to you during the city tours.

* On several sunday's there are still some shops open. This is usually the first sunday of the month. For a complete overview of 2011 check Koopzondagen Maastricht
