A new health insurance system for curative healthcare for all residents of the Netherlands has come into force. Under the new Health Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet) all residents and/or employees are obliged to take out have an health insurance. Every health care insurance company in the Netherlands that has stated it will provide services under the Act, has a legal obligation to accept anybody who applies for insurance.

For the basic insurance you will have to pay a premium to the insurer. This is known as the nominal premium. Depending on your income and family situation, you may be eligible for an allowance in respect of this premium: the health care allowance.

Whether a foreign student is obliged to take out the basis health insurance under the Health Insurance Act depends on the residence purpose and/or employment situation. For more information about what to do in your situation go to www.unimaas.nl / students / insurances / health insurance.

Another option might be AON, Aon Students Insurance provides a complete and affordable insurance package for students, interns, teachers and researchers staying in the Netherlands. The package includes all necessary - and mandatory - insurances required for an educational related stay in the Netherlands, such as medical expenses, travel, liability, legal assistance and personal possesions. The insurance premium is calculated per day, there are no set-up costs, administrative fees or any other charges.
